A GIANT Remix station has arrived at Killingly Public Library!

Members of the Killingly community are invited to design and make their own Self-Portrait Trading Cards.

Families with children of all ages are invited to think like an artist and illustrate your self-portrait, describe how you contribute to your community, share your most important values, and award yourselves with a community badge. Your self-portraits will be published in a deck of cards AND a photo album lookbook featuring the community members!

Professionally printed cards will be shipped to the library for you to pick up within one month of your submission! You can also check out the full deck of cards and the published photo album lookbook at your library branch or online on the GIANT website - all completely free of charge.

Co-Design Reading Games with Emmy Award Winning Sirius Thinking

Inviting kids in kindergarten and first grade to apply and join us for one FREE session of playtesting and co-designing new games for “Game Changers” -  a library of literacy, education games, and videos based on the Emmy Award-winning PBS television series Between the Lions. This free in-person workshop will take place at The GIANT Room offices in New York City. Participating families will receive a $50 digital amazon gift card as a token of appreciation for your time.

Something GIANT has arrived at Babcock Library!

Members of the Babcock community are invited to design their own dream community space that resides in the community’s dream city and then later see the buildings transformed into a deck of published trading cards PLUS a poster that features each building! The posters and card deck will be available for purchase or download digitally for free.

Here’s how it works:

  • At the library, you will fill out a mission sheet to design your dream building.

  • Submit the sheet to the GIANT submission box.

  • Once the remix station closes, you will receive an email or text asking for feedback on your card so you can make any final changes you’d like before publication!

  • The remix is completed and you can visit Babcock Library or The GIANT Room’s website to check out the final remix!

We want to hear parent opinions in the form of an online focus group via Zoom, followed by an in-person co-design session in NYC, and ending in one more online focus group. Participation is required for all three sessions. Parents with kids ages 6-9 are invited to applyParticipants will receive a $200 incentive for their participation in all three sessions.

Participation entails joining two online focus groups and one free workshop focused on co-designing and learning parents’ thoughts on various gaming platforms. Participating parents will be required to join all three sessions. The first online focus group will be scheduled on July 29th from 7:30 to 8:45pm and the second will be held in late August but the date is still to be determined. The in-person co-design session will be held on August 5th from 5:30 to 7:15pm in-person at Sesame Workshop in New York City. When completing the application, applicants will be asked which times work best for them for all three sessions.

A Democracy Design Workshop - Camp for Middle Schoolers!

The GIANT Room and Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL) at Columbia University are partnering to bring a one of a kind camp experience to middle schoolers (ages 11-14) the week of July 14, 2025!

During this experience, students will be co-designers and architects, collaborating in teams to imagine the school of the future. Through guided, creative problem-solving and design thinking activities, student teams will put democracy into action as they step into the roles of leaders and changemakers. Students will leave with concrete visions for the School of 2045 and new skills in communication, listening, and decision-making across lines of difference. Participation is free thanks to funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, however, spots are limited to 35 participants, so be sure to secure your spot!

In order to participate, applicants must commit to attending all of the following sessions and activities:

  • Monday, June 23, 2025 5-6 pm  (Virtual Orientation) 

    • 9 am-10 am: Institute Kickoff and Prototyping Challenge

  • Monday, July 14th - Thursday, July 17th (in person at Columbia Law School) 

    • 9 am-10:30 am: Warm up and Design Challenge #1 

    • 10:30 am-10:50 am: Snack break (**snacks provided) and time outside, weather permitting 

    • 10:50 am-12 pm: Creative brainstorming, problem identification, and creating 

    • 12 pm-12:30 pm: Lunch break (**lunch provided) and time outside, weather permitting 

    • 1 pm-2:30 pm: Warm up and Design Challenge #2

  • Thursday, July 24th 5-6 pm (Virtual Closing Session)

Here’s how it works:

  • At the library, you will draw out your comic strip and fill out an accompanying mission sheet.

  • Submit the comic and the sheet to the GIANT submission box.

  • Once the remix station closes, you will receive an email or text asking for feedback on your comic strip and the title page that the GIANT team will create for you so you can make any final changes you’d like before publication!

The remix is completed and you can visit Waterford Public Library or The GIANT Room’s website to check out the final remix!

GIANT Partners With Verizon in collaboration with Joan Ganz Cooney Center from Sesame Workshop!

Participation entails one parent and one child, between ages 8-12, joining one free, two- hour workshop focused on co-designing and playfully brainstorming of ideas for the best methods for parents and families to navigate introducing smartwatches, smartphones, and social media to their kids. . Kids who join will have a chance to learn and practice the art of giving and receiving feedback and then to join a prototyping exercise with industry innovators and researchers. Applicants have the choice of joining a workshop on June 6th from 5pm to 7pm, June 7th from 10am to 12pm, or June 7th from 2pm to 4pm. All sessions will be held in person at the Westside YMCA in New York City.

This program is completely free for children and their families to participate. We are accepting a limited number of children in New York City to participate in the program. Families with children ages 8-12 are invited to apply. As a token of appreciation for your time, families will receive a $100 e-gift card for joining one of the sessions.
