ABOUT THE CREATIVE TECH RESIDENCY

The GIANT Room is for kids with GIANT dreams who dare to act on them. We are a makerspace + art studio for children and their families to discover interests, ideate challenges they care to solve, get messy and bring their ideas into reality. Our promise to children is to help them find joy in problem-solving, creating, and inventing. Our promise to parents is to provide the best-in-class STEAM (STEM + Arts) education as well as a safe, relaxed, and fun space for them to bond with their children. We are currently fully operational in person at our hub and online. In-person in NYC we follow all of the CDC and NYC guidelines for health and safety including wearing masks, hand washing, physical distancing, increased airflow. 

As part of this residency, you will work directly with founders of The GIANT 

Room, Dr. Azadeh Jamalian and Dr. Jessica Mezei, and GIANT team on designing developing programs focused on creative tech tools, support or lead workshops, and assist with web-development projects. 

This is a part-time paid position as a contractor. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in writing, documenting, and organizing instructional content focused on creative technologies, coding, robotics, microcontrollers, and fabrication techniques such as 3D design and printing, laser cutting, and more 

  • Assist in teaching workshops to children 3 to 12 years old online and in-person based on level of experience and areas of expertise 

  • Assist in designing and developing installations and projects with appropriate technology tools 

  • Assist in designing, prototyping, playtesting, and fabricating new products and DIY kits 

  • Assist in special projects based on areas of expertise 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Background in art/design, computer science, engineering, and/or STEAM education 

  • You are interested in STEM + Arts, maker education, and fabrication 

  • You are interested in building technology tools and projects with children. Ideally, you have work experience with children (3-12 year old)

  • You are interested in working with a small business to help it grow 

  • Nice to have experience or interest in tools like: Roblox, Minecraft, Scratch, code.org and other block based coding applications or AI tools for kids 

  • Nice to have experience with physical computing tools like: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Microbit etc.

WHY YOU SHOULD APPLY

  • You will learn how to use all sorts of fabrication tools such as laser cutter, embroidery machine, vinyl cutter, and 3D printer and more

  • You will learn about creative technologies such as Microbit, Raspberry Pi, Gogo board, littleBits, Makey Makey, Ozobot, Wonder Workshop, Splats, and simple electronics and will be challenged to use them creatively while integrating art, design, and tech

  • If you already know how to use these tools and machines, you’ll be challenged to come up with new product ideas, designs, and projects

  • You will have access to our studio, materials, and fabrication tools to work on creative projects. You may join the studio outside your working hours to work on side projects as well

  • You will work with a talented, ambitious, and dedicated team with diverse backgrounds in arts, music, engineering, product design, and education

  • You will work in a highly creative and collaborative environment, a place where
    hundreds of ideas get born and built on a daily basis

  • You will own GIANT programming and grow with the company as we scale our online and in person programs to multiple hubs
