Family Workshop: Building the City at Museum of the City of New York

  • Museum of the City of New York 1220 5th Avenue New York, NY, 10029 United States (map)

The GIANT Room is partnering with the Museum of the City of New York for a new series of creative STEM Workshops for Families!

For families who dream of designing and building their own cities!

Join us for a fun, hands-on, and interactive workshop focused on designing and building our own cities! Get inspired by the artifacts found in the museum’s exhibitions to create your own buildings, bridges, and other additions to the city. This workshop is presented in collaboration with the Museum in the City of New York, designed for families with children ages 5 to 9, younger and older siblings are also invited to join!

Participating parents and their children will come together to design, test, and build their own creative ideas and solutions to add to a city, work together to re-imagine those designs, experiment with materials, and ask the kinds of big questions that engineers ask every day: How do we make this stronger? How do we make this move? How do we design something that lasts?

The inspiration for this experience connects directly to MCNY’s newest exhibition, He Built This City: Joe Macken’s Model. Through this exhibition, families can explore the history and craftsmanship behind some of New York City’s most iconic sites like the Brooklyn Bridge, Prospect Park, and more!

After the workshop, families will dive deeper with a guided exploration of the exhibition itself, uncovering how innovation, design, and persistence have shaped New York City into what it is today.
