The GIANT Room has partnered with Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, and Medley Learning to co-design a learning tool for dyslexic students.

The GIANT Room, an innovation hub for children and their families, is honored to announce a partnership with Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and Medley Learning to co-design a browser-based tool that adds academic support to existing classroom materials, helping students access grade-level content more independently.

Youths in 6th through 8th grade who have dyslexia will be invited to join us for three in-person creative co-design workshops during the week of September 21st. Each session will be two hours long, and participating families will receive a $25 gift card per session as an appreciation for their time and participation.

During the sessions, youths will engage in hands-on creative activities, share ideas, build prototypes, and provide feedback on how digital tools can better support students with dyslexia as they navigate classroom materials. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with Joan Ganz Cooney Center, Medley Learning, and The GIANT Room’s researchers, educators, and designers to help shape a meaningful learning tool that is engaging, accessible, and responsive to students’ needs.

The GIANT Room believes the most engaging and effective learning experiences are the ones that are designed with families’ points of view in mind, and even better, those that are designed with children, youth, and caregivers involved in the design process. These co-design partnerships not only provide opportunities for families to meet and build ideas with real designers and researchers, but also make it possible to create resources that students can use to learn more independently and confidently.

Named for the co-founder and visionary behind Sesame Street, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center is an independent research and innovation lab within Sesame Workshop that advances positive futures for kids in the digital world. They conduct research on emerging technologies and collaborate with technologists, digital media producers, and educators to put this research into action to support children’s learning and well-being. Joan Ganz Cooney Center also works directly with policy makers and investors to drive national conversations and decisions that help children thrive within the digital world.

Medley Learning’s platform makes it easy for teachers to meet students where they are, providing support that is tailored to each of their learner’s English proficiency and academic needs. Using frameworks like WIDA and drawing on best practices in language acquisition, Medley helps schools ensure that multilingual learners can access rigorous grade-level instruction without the time-intensive prep work that often slows down teaching. Medley makes equity in the classroom practical, scalable, and sustainable.
