We are beyond excited to welcome Lexy Ho-Tai to The GIANT Room for her next exhibition of the Kookerville utopian world, titled, “Futurescaping”.

To celebrate the opening of her exhibition, we have invited her to join and lead a free online workshop for GIANT Families - teaching techniques to make scrappy puppets and a moving-mouth mechanic using cardboard, fabric and glue. RSVP for her workshop.

Don’t forget to come and see the exhibition in person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am to 4pm at The GIANT Room Chelsea Hub.

Here we sat down we Lexy to learn more about her background and the story behind her work:

I am an interdisciplinary artist who is interested in the intersection between art making and making the world a better place.

Through my multi-disciplinary visual art and teaching practice I explore accessibility, inclusion, identity, craft and play. I disrupt the exclusive and elitist tendencies of the art world by working in nontraditional art spaces, repurposing discarded and recycled materials, collaborating with artists working across multiple disciplines, and engaging with audiences of diverse backgrounds. Through soft sculptures, performance, installation, murals, and workshops, my public and participatory practice employs humor, play, and absurdity to invite viewers to contemplate pressing social and environmental issues. I believe that joy is a radical act of resistance, and that play forges a powerful space for audiences to envision and work towards alternative futures.

As a teaching artist, collaboration, workshops, and engagement are integral parts of my practice. I have been an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design, and a teaching artist with Children’s Museum of the Arts, Museum of Arts and Design, Groundswell Community Murals, Blissful Bedrooms for Disabled Youth, and the Sunnyside Community Center for Seniors, among others. I love to help cultivate creativity in people as a means of storytelling, agency, and self-expression.

Lexy has had artist residencies at Watermill Center, Flux Factory, Museum of Arts and Design, ARoS Museum, Everglades National Park, Elsewhere Museum (forthcoming), and Wassaic Project (forthcoming). She has a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School for Design. See more of her work at LEXYMAKESTHINGS.com or @lexymakesthings on instagram, and don’t forget to come by The GIANT Room to see her amazing exhibition by our windows.
